"W" Crimp
A confined crimp that makes two longitudinal indentations that form a “W” cross section.

"W" Terminal
A terminal for solder connection providing solder connection points on both sides of a terminal block.

"3/4 W" Terminal
A terminal designed for solder connection that provides a connection point on one side only of a terminal block.

Wave Soldering
A process wherein items to be soldered are brought in contact with a gently overflowing wave of liquid solder that is circulated by a pump in an appropriately designed solder pot reservoir.

Wedge Bond
Metal-to-metal lead bond formed by a wedge shaped tool. It may be a cold weld, ultrasonic or thermal compression bond.

Wedge-Type Connector
A connector in which the contact between the conductor and the connector is made by pressure exerted by a wedge.

Welded Circuit
A circuit of electronic parts in which leads are interconnected welding techniques.

Wetting
The formation of a relatively uniform, smooth, unbroken and adherent film of solder to a base material.

Whisker
Single crystal growth resembling fine wire, which appears most frequently on components that have been electroplated with tin. Whisker growth requires no voltage.

Wicking
Desoldering method utilizing prefluxed braid of stranded wire or braid used with flux. The wick material is placed on the solder joint and a heated iron tip is applied to the wick. Capillary action draws the solder up into the wick material.

Wideband
A communications channel offering a transmission bandwidth greater than a voice-grade channel. Synonymous with broadband. A channel broader in bandwidth than a voice-grade channel.

Wiping Action
The action that occurs when contacts are mated with a sliding action. Wiping has the effect of removing small amounts of contamination from the contact surfaces, thus establishing better conductivity.

Wire Lead Machines
Devices for processing wire leads vary from simple hand or bench-style tools for bending and Forming of leads to high speed equipment that can perform a number of operations. Machines are available that will measure, cut , form, bend, strip, and straighten wire leads.

Wire Stop
A stop at the end of a terminal wire barrel that prevents wire from passing completely through the barrel in such a way as to interfere with the function of the contact.

Wire Wrapped Connection
A solderless connection made by wrapping bare wire around a square or rectangular terminal with a power or hand tool. (Also called Solderless Wrapped Connection; Wrapped Connection or Wrap Post Connection.)

Wiring Devices
The accessory parts and materials that are used in the installation of wiring such as terminals, connectors, junction boxes, conduit, clamps, insulation and supports.

Withdrawal Force
See Contact Engaging and Separating Force.

Work Curve
A graph that plots the pull out force, indent force and relative conductivity of a crimp joint as a function of various depths of crimping.

Wrap Type
See Wire Wrapped Connection.
