“N” Series
A large radio frequency connector covered by military specification.

“NC” Contacts
Contacts that are normally closed when the control circuit is not energized.

“NO” Contacts
Contacts that are normally open when the control circuit is not energized.

Nest
Part of a crimping die set, the nest provides the location and support for the terminal barrel as it is being deformed into the desired crimp configuration by the indentor. (Also called Anvil.)

Network Layer
The third layer of the OSI model of data communications, which involves routing data messages through the network using alternative routes. (See OSI Standards.)

Nick
A small cut or notch in the conductor strands or insulation.

Nickel (Ni)
Metallic element with Atomic Number 28. High purity nickel is used for applications in which copper would normally be used, but where high temperatures are most likely to be encountered.

Nodes, Stations
Points in a network where service is provided, service is used or communications channels are interconnected. Nodes are sometimes used interchangeably with workstations.

Noise
Refers to random spurts of electrical energy or interference.

Noncontaminating Compound
A compounded material that will not leach ingredients, so as to contaminate or degrade adjacent materials, under given environmental conditions.

Nonfunctional Land
A land on internal or external layers not connected to the conductive pattern on its layer.

Non-Insulated Terminals
As the name implies, solderless terminals without insulation.

Nonpolar Solvents
Solvents that are not ionized sufficiently to be electrically conductive and that cannot dissolve nonpolar compounds, such as hydro-carbons and resins.

Nonwetting
A condition whereby a surface has contacted molten solder but has had none of the solder adhere to it.

Normal Force, Normal Contact Force
The force perpendicular to the contact interface.

Nude Contact
A contact with a locking member that remains in the insert at all times.

Numerical Aperture (NA)
A characteristic parameter of any given fiber’s light-gathering capability, defined by the maximum angle of light that is relative to the fiber’s axis, and that is propagated through the fiber. It is the sine of the vertex angle of the largest cone of meridional rays that can enter or leave an optical system or element, multiplied by the refractive index of the medium in which the vertex of the cone is located.
