Hz | Hertz |
Handshaking | An exchange of predetermined signals for purposes of control when a connection is established between two data sets. |
Hard Soldering | Process of joining two metals by utilizing an alloy with a temperature higher than 800° F. (427° C) (See Soft Soldering.) |
Hardware | Hardware usually means shells, guide pins, polarizing pins, strain relief clamps, mounting screws, etc. (See Jacks, Pins, Terminals, Clips.) |
Harness | A group of wires and cables, usually made with breakouts, which are tied together or pulled into a rubber or plastic sheath. A harness provides interconnection of an electric circuit. |
Header | A feed through device that introduces a conductive path through an insulating plate. |
Heat and Pull | Desoldering method utilizing a soldering iron with a shaped heater block attached, a molten solder “solder pot” or solder fountain, or a device that grasps, heats, and then pulls the leads of the component to be removed. |
Heat Distortion | The deformation of material due to the application of heat. |
Heat Endurance | The time of heat a material can withstand before failing a specific physical test. Heat endurance is an important consideration during oven soldering of terminations. |
Heat-Resistant | A copper or brass terminal that is nickel plated to withstand 650° F. |
Heat Soak | Heating a circuit over a period of time to allow all parts of the package and circuit to stabilize at the same temperature. |
Hermaphroditic Connector | An interconnecting device in which both mating parts are identical at their mating surfaces. (Also called Sexless Connector.) |
Hermaphroditic Contact | Contact in which both mating elements are precisely alike at their mating face. |
Hermetic | Airtight. Since all materials are permeable, specifications define levels of hermeticity. |
Hermetic Seal | Hermetically sealed connectors are usually multiple contact connectors where the contacts are bonded to the connector by glass or other materials. |
Hertzian Stress | Stressed expressed in p.s.i. that is developed during elastic deformation phase of establishing contact. The stress is a result of normal force and the geometry of the contact and the modulus of elasticity of the contact material. |
Hi ReI | (1) High Reliability device designed to extremely tight tolerances and long service life. It must meet high-quality control levels. (2) A terminal, usually made of nickel or nickel alloys, designed to tolerate extremely high temperatures. |
High-Current Terminal Block | A block designed especially for high-voltage applications. Designed with clamp or lug connections. |
High Energy Surface | A hard solid with high melting point, including metals, metal oxides and glasses that are arbitrarily defined as having surface-free energies in the range 5,000 to 500 ergs/ cm2. (See Low Energy Surface.) |
High-Split | A broadband cable system in which the bandwidth utilized to send toward the head end (reverse direction) is approximately 6 to 180 MHz, and the bandwidth utilized to send away from the head end (forward direction) is approximately 220 to 400 MHz. The guard band between the forward and reverse directions (180 to 220 MHz) provides isolation from interference. |
Hold Current | The minimum current that will keep relay contact springs energized. (Also called Electrical Hold Value.) |
Holding Strength | Ability of a connector to remain assembled to a cable when under tension. |
Hood | An enclosure, attached to the back of a connector, to contain and protect wires and cable attached to the terminals of a connector. A cable clamp is usually an integral part of a hood. |
Hook Terminal | Terminal with a hook-shaped tongue. |
Hook Tongue | Type of terminal with a tongue that opens from the side rather than from the end. |
Hostile Environment Connectors | Connectors designed and engineered for operation in hostile environment conditions, such as extreme high temperatures of 677° C (1,250° F), extreme low temperatures of absolute zero, and severe water tight conditions. |
Hot Bar Soldering | Technique in which a heating process solders all flat cable conductors simultaneously to terminals of a flat connector. |
Hot-Line Clamp | A connector that may be installed or removed by means of an insulated stick while the conductor is energized. (Also called Live-Line Connector.) |
Housing | Connector-less insert, but with insert-retaining and positioning hardware required by standard construction. (See Connector Housing.) |
Hygroscopic | Capable of absorbing moisture from the air. |
