E Glass
A low alkali lime alumina borosilicate glass, noted for its good electrical properties.

ETPC
Abbreviation for electrolytic tough pitch copper. It has a minimum conductivity of 99.9%.

Eccentricity
The center of a conductor’s location with respect to the circular cross-section of insulation. Eccentricity is expressed as a percentage of displacement of one circle within the other.

Edge Connector
A one-piece receptacle, containing female contacts, designed to receive the edge of a printed circuit board and interconnect on which the male contacts are etched or printed. The connector may contain either a single or double row of female contacts. Both thermoplastic and thermosetting insulating materials are used.

Edge Dip Solderability Test
The oldest solderability test, it is performed by taking a specially prepared specimen, fluxing it with a non-activated rosin flux, then immersing it into a pot of molten solder at a predetermined rate of immersion for a predetermined dwell and then withdrawing at a particular rate.

Edgeboard Connector
A connector that mates with printed wiring leads running to the edge of a PC board. (Also called Card Edge Connector.)

Edgeboard Contact
A series of contacts printed on or near any edge of a printed board and intended for mating with an edge connector.

Egg Crating
The insulating walls between the cavities within the contact or wire entry face of the connector housing. This prevents shorts and minimizes shock.

Elastomer
A material that at room temperature stretches under low stress to at least twice its length and snaps back to original length upon release of stress.

Electric Strength
The maximum potential gradient that a material can withstand without rupture. (Also called Dielectric Strength and Disruptive Gradient.)

Electrical Connector
Provides fiberoptic transceiver access to AC power (+12 to +15 VDC), then transmits this power source to the unit’s power converter.

Electrical Hold Value
The minimum current that will keep relay contact springs energized. (Also called Hold Current.)

Electrical Resistance Test
A measurement of the resistance from circuit to circuit through the interfacial connection, designed to insure a satisfactory connection.

Electroless Deposition
The deposition of conductive material from an auto-catalytic plating solution without application of electrical current.

Electroless Plating
The controlled autociltalytic reduction of a metal ion on certain catalytic surfaces.

Electrolytic Corrosion
Corrosion by means of electrochemical erosion.

Electrolytic Tough Pitch
A term describing the method of raw-copper preparation to ensure a good physical and electrical grade copper finished product.

Electromagnetism
Magnetism caused by the flow of an electric current.

Electromotive Force
The force that determines the flow of electricity; a difference of electric potential.

Electronic Hook-up Wire
Wires used to make the internal connections between the various electrical parts of electronic assemblies.

Electroplating
The electrode position of an adherent metal coating on a conductive object for protection, decoration, or other purposes.

Electrotinning
Electroplating tin on an object.

Emulation
The imitation of one device by another device.

Encapsulating
Enclosing an article in an envelope of plastic.

End Bell
An accessory similar to a cable clamp that attaches to the back of a plug or receptacle. It serves as an adaptor for the rear of connectors.

End Finish
Quality of the surface at an optical fiber’s end, commonly described as mirror, mist, hackle, chipped, cracked, or specified by final grit size used in polishing.

End Position Mounting
A mounting option for terminal blocks. Contacts in end sections allow an installer to mount blocks with screws in end section holes.

End Separation Loss
The optical power loss caused by distance between the end of a fiber and a source, detector or another fiber. (See also Extrinsic Joint Loss.)

Engaging and Separating Force
The amount of force needed to engage and/or separate contact elements in mating connectors. Force levels vary.

Entrapment
The damaging admission and trapping of air, flux and fumes, it is caused by contamination and plating.

Environment
The aggregate of all conditions that externally influence a device’s performance.

Environmentally Sealed
A connector provided with gaskets, seals, potting or other devices to keep out moisture, dirt, air or dust that might reduce its performance.

Epoxy
A family of thermosetting resins used in the packaging of semiconductor devices. Epoxies form a chemical bond to many metal surfaces.

Equalization
A means to modifying the frequency response of an amplifier or network, thereby resulting in a flat overall response. It is slope compensation done by a module within an amplifier enclosure.

Error Detecting Code
A code in which a data signal conforms to specific rules of construction so that departures from the norm (errors) are automatically detected.

Ethernet
A 10-Mbit/sec CSMA/CD standard, utilizing coaxial cable, developed at Xerox, Rochester, NY.

Eutectic
(1) An isothermal reversible reaction in which a liquid is converted into two or more intimately mixed solids on cooling; the number of solids formed being the same as the number of components in the system. (2) An alloy having the composition indicated by the eutectic point on an equilibrium diagram. (3) An alloy structure of intermixed solid constituents formed by a eutectic reaction.

Expansion Connector
A connector that provides a flexible connection between a rigid conductor and electrical apparatus.

Extraction Tool
A tool used for removing a contact from a connector. A device used for removing taper pins from taper pin receptacles.

Eyelet Installation
The feeding, inserting, staking and fusing of eyelets in printed boards to provide a properly fused connection.

Eyelets
Hollow tubes inserted in terminals or printed boards to provide mechanical support for component leads for electrical connection.
