Leviton and Coulomb Technologies team to enable home, public EV charging stations

Jul 21, 2010

MELVILLE, N.Y. & CAMPBELL, Calif. -- Leviton Manufacturing and Coulomb Technologies have announced an OEM, product and marketing partnership for the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) market.

Through the agreement, Leviton’s EVSE product family, including home and public charging stations, will be network-enabled by Coulomb's ChargePoint Network through an open interface architecture that provides Leviton customers advanced features similar to all charging stations on the ChargePoint driver network.

The product line will debut at the Plug-In 2010 Conference and Exposition in San Jose, California on July 26-29, 2010 in Leviton booth #310.

Leviton's Evr-Green Level 1 portable cord set empowers consumers to charge their EV anywhere a standard outlet is available. Leviton also has developed a receptacle for EV owners to plug in their Level 1 cord set. In addition, Leviton’s Level 2 residential charging stations range from 16 Amp to 32 Amp charging levels.

The Leviton public stations offer Level 2 (208/240 V @ 30 Amp) charging via a standard SAE J1772 connector and fixed 18-foot cable and Level I (120 V @ 16 Amp) charging via a standard NEMA 5-20 receptacle protected behind a locking door. These products are backed by the company's nationwide customer service network to provide assessment, installation, and support.

For Drivers:

--Providing open access for all drivers using any standards-based RFID card

--Controlling access to eliminate energy theft and to enhance safety

--Providing EV drivers a way to easily locate, access and use any of the expected thousands of ChargePoint charging stations using a smart phone iPhone or Blackberry applications

--Integrating with the utility Smart Grid for demand side management and preferred pricing

For Hosts/Owners:

--Allowing station owners to set charging session access pricing via a web enabled user interface

--Enabling utilities a way to manage grid load and consolidate billing

--Integrating with the Smart Grid for remote management, Time-Of-Use pricing, demand response, flexible billing, maintenance, and other on-demand software applications

--Allowing seamless integration with Utility back office business systems, Automatic Metering Infrastructures (AMIs), or home area networks.

--Giving fleet managers the ability to monitor and track the charging of their vehicles

“Coulomb is thrilled to see Leviton, a trusted world-class manufacturing company, join a growing number of EVSE providers by being a part of the ChargePoint Network which provides a suite of software business applications for the owners and users of EV charging infrastructure,” said Richard Lowenthal, CEO of Coulomb Technologies. “Through our open network interface, Leviton brings a large suite of proven EV apps to their customers.”

According to Mike Mattei, VP and General Manager for Leviton’s Commercial and Industrial Division, “Leviton now has a complete solution for home and public EV charging, providing the charging stations as well as installation by certified contractors and extensive customer service.
