Harsh environment connectors from Deutsch target civil aerospace applications

Deutsch says its new 369 series of connectors was developed primarily to meet the requirements of civil aerospace cabin system applications, including cabin and seat lighting, panel-break interconnection, oxygen and emergency systems, and passenger power and seat actuation. The news series is based on the Deutsch ARINC 809/EN4165 single module connector, designed for applications where shielding is not required and fewer contacts are needed. Standard layouts include 3-, 6-, and 9-way.

According to Deutsch, the connectors have been designed so that each mated half can be configured with either male or female contacts, thus doubling the number of available keying configurations and ensuring that the contacts on the powered side of the system are electrically protected. The aerospace/military standard AS39029 gold-plated contacts can be easily extracted and reinserted from the rear of the connector with standard tooling, says the manufacturer.

The connectors are fully sealed at both the cable and the mating interface, making them suitable for use in areas with high levels of moisture. Rated at IP67, the connectors feature excellent fluid resistance, vibration tolerance, and temperature rating (-55 to +175°C). They are manufactured from a high-performance composite thermoplastic material that conforms to the low smoke, toxicity, and flammability requirements of the aerospace industry.

Installation and maintenance is quick and error-proof, with a range of five individually color-coded keying options for cabling. The 369 connectors are suitable for blind-mating or low visibility conditions, with a scoop-proof interface preventing damage to contacts. A button latch mechanism ensures that the connectors can be quickly and accurately installed, with an audible feedback to signify positive locking. Mounting is achieved with a cable tie, which also prevents inadvertent un-mating. The connector series is complemented by a range of accessories, including easy-fit backshells.
