IEEE advances EPON interoperability

Sep 12, 2011

The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) announced that the 28 companies and laboratories that participate in the IEEE P1904.1 Working Group have achieved an important milestone in the development of the IEEE P1904.1 Service Interoperability in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (SIEPON) standard. IEEE-SA reports that this draft standard is largely complete from a technical perspective and has entered the IEEE P1904.1 Working Group letter ballot phase. The IEEE P1904.1 Working Group began its work in January 2010 and reached this important milestone after 20 months of rigorous review and revision.

Pending formal approval, the document will be published as an IEEE standard that will provide open, international, system-level specifications that enable multi-vendor, "plug-and-play" interoperability in EPON systems. The IEEE P1904.1 SIEPON draft standard covers both 1G-EPON and 10G-EPON and describes the transport, service, and control planes.

Sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society (http://www.comsoc.org), the IEEE P1904.1 SIEPON draft standard will facilitate EPON deployments for operators already familiar with this technology or exploring it for future use. IEEE EPON is billed as the market-leading fiber-access technology, with worldwide deployments supporting more than 60 million subscribers today and an anticipated subscriber base of more than 100 million by the end of 2013. These systems support a diverse suite of business and residential services, including IPTV, VoIP, commercial-grade data services, and cellular backhaul.

Given the large and accelerating global deployment, IEEE-SA notes that there is a strong demand from network operators for fully interoperable, “plug-and-play” solutions, available from a diverse community of suppliers. To meet this need, the IEEE P1904.1 SIEPON working group is developing a complete and testable standard that offers clear-cut guidance to component manufacturers, system manufacturers, network operators, and testing laboratories.

The following companies are members of the IEEE P1904.1 Working Group and contributed to this work: ARRIS Group, Broadcom Corporation, Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs), China Telecom Corporation Ltd., CommScope, Inc., Cortina Systems, Inc., Enablence Technologies Inc., Ericsson AB, Fiberhome Telecommunication Technologies Co., Ltd., Fujitsu Telecom Networks, Ltd., Hitachi, Ltd., Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., Ikanos, Iometrix, KDDI R&D Laboratories Inc., Korea Telecom Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, NEC Corporation, NTT Corporation, Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd, Oliver Solutions, Ltd., PMC-Sierra, Inc., Qualcomm Atheros, Research Institute of Telecommunications Transmission, China Academy of Telecommunication Research (RITT, CATR), Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), Victor R. Blake, and ZTE Corporation.

Pending completion and formal approval of the draft, deployment of IEEE P1904.1 SIEPON-compliant equipment is expected to begin in 2012.
