December 18, 2009 -- Nexans reports has won a contract worth approximately 100 million Euro to develop and provide high voltage subsea power export cables to connect the London Array wind farm to the UK electric power grid.
The contract specifies the design, manufacture and supply of four 150 kV XLPE submarine power cables, each 53 km to 54 km in length, to be laid in parallel. Nexans will ship two cables in 2011 and two in 2012; all will be delivered in single continuous lengths from the company's plant in Halden, Norway. The cables will also incorporate fiber optic elements manufactured at a sister Nexans facility in Rognan, Norway. The contract includes cable accessories such as repair joints and terminations.
The wind farm is being installed on a 233 sq. km site in the Thames Estuary, located approximately 20 km off UK shores. The first phase of construction, expected to be done by 2012, will bring on-line 630 MW of capacity via 175 turbines. A planned second phase will bring the wind farm's total capacity to 1000 MW and will supply power for approximately 750,000 residences.
