MT-RJ system fiber optic connectors and cable assemblies are available in 50.0 and 62.5 µm multimode versions; a singlemode configuration is planned. They are said to allow for doubling of port density in existing networking equipment and patch panels. The form factor reportedly was developed with the industry-standard RJ-45 modular plug-and-jack system in mind and is a drop-in replacement for that copper-based system.
