Crimpless solar connectors ease PV site installation

Sep 19, 2011

Cyntech Components has introduced a two-piece, IP67-rated  solar PV connector that requires no crimping tool for assembly, designed to reduce solar PV system installation time and complexity. The connector system reportedly consists of pre-assembled male plugs and female jacks in separate sealed bags of 50 per package. Contacts are made from high quality copper to ensure less than 5 mOhm contact resistance (typically 1 mOhm - 3 mOhm) and negligible power loss. Contacts are rated at 30A and 1000V DC (TUV EN50521).

The connectors are designed to operate in ambient temperatures from -40 to +85 degrees C and accept cables with an outer diameter of 5.8 mm to 7 mm. Two versions are offered, one for cable cross sections from 1.5 mm2 to 2.5 mm2 and the other for cables between 4.0 mm2 and 6.0 mm2. To make a reliable connection, the installer simply loosens a screw, inserts the stripped cable into the connector from the back and then presses a spring contact by thumb until its toggle engages. The connector, which has an outer diameter of 18.8 mm, is then screwed together and the assembly tightened using two plastic wrenches, provided. If required, the connection can then be disengaged using one of these multi-function tools.
