As covered at various media outlets, on September 27, a fire broke out at the Yantai Foxconn plant in China's Shandong province, reportedly at a facility that assembles Sony consumer electronics.
A Hon Hai spokesperson said in a Reuters report that the fire was sparked by faulty electrical cables in the facility's roof. No casualties or impact on operations were reported from fire. An extensive report at Hong Kong technology blog MICGadget said that 80,000 workers are employed at the Yantai plant, which primarily assembles PCs, Sony laptops, computer components, and printers. Foxconn told the Taiwan technology news site DigiTimes that it believes the fire started in abandoned pipe lines located near the top of the building.
In May 2011, Foxconn shut down operations after a deadly explosion at its facility in Chengdu, China, prompting Foxconn and its partners to pledge to make a number of reforms.
