Has the time come for the elusive intelligent building?

Nov 21, 2011

A seminar hosted by Interconnection World's sister publication Cabling Installation & Maintenance and delivered via the Web will make the case that property and network owners are closer than ever to realizing the automated or intelligent building concept.

"Automated and intelligent buildings have been 'on the horizon' for a number of years - a favorite topic of futurists but perpetually just-out-of-reach from current technology," Cabling Installation & Maintenance says when describing the seminar. "Could some recent technical developments be the breakthrough that pulls automated and intelligent buildings within practical reach? And if so, what type of layer-one infrastructure will be required to support the applications that will be incorporated into an automated building design?"

The seminar details recently developed Power over Ethernet capabilities and also dives into the cabling standards that map out the physical-layer infrastructure for enabling building intelligence. It also will describe some of the specific applications - including LED-based lighting - that can take advantage of traditional LAN cabling systems as a result of these technology and standards advancements.

Presentations that will be delivered during the seminar include:

  • Breakthroughs in device powering
  • The cabling standard for building automation
  • Low-voltage LED lighting
  • Access control systems

The seminar will be broadcast live at 1:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday, November 30, then will be available for viewing on-demand for a period of six months.
