IEEE ComSoc lauded for corporate standards development

NEW YORK, NY -- January 8, 2009 -- The IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), the worldwide professional organization dedicated to the advancement of communications technologies, was recently honored for its “Outstanding Contribution to Corporate Standards Development” by the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), a globally recognized standards-setting body.

      

“The IEEE Communications Society deserves this honor for its groundbreaking work in the development of entity standards,” says Steve Mills, president-elect of the IEEE Standards Association, past chair of the IEEE-SA Standards Board & of the Corporate Advisory Group. “The IEEE-SA was extremely impressed with the dedication of ComSoc’s efforts to development of several entity standards for the communications and networking fields.”

      

“This is a significant award that emphasizes IEEE ComSoc’s commitment to produce global standards,” adds Douglas N. Zuckerman, who held the position of IEEE ComSoc president in 2008 - 2009. “It also serves to underscore the expertise of our standards  Working Groups and their dedication to advancement of next generation global communications.”

      

Over the past century, the IEEE has produced nearly 1,300 standards to meet the global needs of a broad range of technologies and industries. The IEEE-SA Sponsor Award is presented annually to IEEE standards sponsors that have shown exceptional support of standards development. The award citation notes ComSoc’s outstanding leadership in the development and promotion of high quality entity standards in the area of telecommunications.

      

ComSoc sponsored several entity projects  that benefit global  industry:

* IEEE 1900.4 for Architectural Building Blocks Enabling Network-Device Distributed Decision Making for Optimized Radio Resource Usage in Heterogeneous Wireless Access Networks

* IEEE P1901 for Broadband over Power Line Networks: Medium Access Control and Physical Layer Specifications

* IEEE P1902.1 for Long Wavelength Wireless Network Protocol

* IEEE P1903 for a Next Generation Service Overlay Network

* IEEE P1904.1 for Service Interoperability in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (SIEPON)

      

“The IEEE ComSoc Standards Board was established in 2004 to leverage the vast experience of our global experts and develop world-class standards,” offers Alexander Gelman, the board’s chair (2006-2009). “We deeply appreciate this distinction from the IEEE-SA and are extremely proud to receive this award on behalf of the hard work and expertise of our standards Working Groups.”

      

IEEE ComSoc is striving to maintain a technical activities ecosystem for support of its standard development projects. ComSoc Standards Board binds its Working Groups with relevant ComSoc Technical Committees, conferences, and publications; appoints subject matter experts to provide technical advice to Working Groups; and creates expert groups when required by the projects.
