The International Wire and Cable Symposium Inc. (IWCS) announced the establishment of endowments to support future scholarships at two universities.
Endowments have been established at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell for students in that school’s Department of Plastics Engineering, and at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte in the William States Lee College of Engineering. Both schools are located within close proximity to recent and planned IWCS conference venues in Providence, RI and Charlotte, NC.
Both universities intend to be represented at the IWCS Conference when it is held in their vicinity, and will be present their research capabilities, as well as seeking internships and post-graduate employment opportunities for their students. Scholarship award recipients will also be recognized at those conferences.

The endowments will eventually support the granting of two annual scholarships, tentatively set at $3,000 each, at each institution. While the endowment funds are building, the IWCS has also established two current scholarships at each institution in the amount of $3,000, each to be awarded this year.
Both current and endowment awards will be made by the institutions to students in their second, third or fourth years of studies in an engineering curriculum. IWCS will have final approval of any proposed awards.
John Barteld, CEO/director of IWCS, comments, “The IWCS has long been committed to support of technology and education. Through the establishment of these endowments, we take the commitment to the long term. Scholarship support for deserving students is one way that the IWCS can support future technology in the industry through assisting young engineers in their education.”
Barteld added that he is hopeful that industry companies will also support the endowments through contributions. He noted that contributions can be of any size, and do not need to be long term commitments.
