High-density 25-Gbit/sec connector

May 3, 2011

The ERmet ZDHD family of connectors from ERNI Electronics is designed for data rates up to 25 Gbits/sec with a density of 84 differential signal pairs per inch. Previous-generation connectors could accommodate 40 pairs per inch, ERNI notes.

The ERmet ZDplus connector is based on the same mechanical design as the ERmet ZD, which was introduced by ERNI and Tyco 10 years ago. ERNI explained that in order to achieve greater performance in the same dimension, it further optimized the female connector's signal routing and press-fit termination. The first product introduced in the line is an angled female connector with press-fit technology in a four-pair configuration. It is mating-compatible with the ERmet ZD male connector, meaning that existing backplanes do not need to be redesigned or have their layouts altered.

The 80-signals-per-inch density, along with the high data rate, accommodate the needs of telecommunications and data-communications manufacturers, ERNI states. "The ERmet ZDHD system caters to these requirements and offers 14 contact rows per inch with six differential pairs per row," the company says. "Using ERmet ZDHD connectors, data rates of up to 25 Gbits/sec are possible. to this end, 84 signal pairs per inch for right-angle PCB applications are available." ERNI further explains that this level of density was achieved by reducing the pitch between the rows to 1.8mm and the pitch between the differential pairs within a row to 3.6mm. "The basis for this is provided by a miniaturized press-fit technology with a hole diameter of just 0.46mm," the company adds. "Robust alignment guides on the walls of the male connectors also ensure reliable mating." Initially, 6-pair versions of the ZDHD connectors are available, with 2- and 4-pair versions planned, ERNI says.
