ITT Interconnect Solutions recently reported that its APD series plastic circular connectors are now specified for use in wheeled armored vehicles. Originally designed to meet the automotive DIN 72585 (now ISO 15170) specification, the connectors are now sanctioned for use in wheeled, armored vehicle applications where military qualifications are not required.

“Military and defense applications have traditionally used rugged, metal connectors fully qualified to military specifications," explains Keith Teichmann, director of marketing for ITT Interconnect Solutions. "However, the need to reduce government spending has opened the market for non-military-type components, as not all military vehicles require the same level of reliability."

The APD Series circular plastic connectors are billed as lightweight and easy to assemble, while offering the additional security of a secondary locking system for high pin counts. The connectors are capable of handling up to 48 volts and are available in a wide range of layouts, ranging from 1 to 51 contacts.

Teichmann continues, “While the inner frame of wheeled armored vehicles incorporates weaponry and radio or drive controls that require military-specified connectors, other applications within the vehicle, such as lighting, mirrors, and cooling and heating functions, utilize more cost-effective and lighter plastic connectors."

The APD Series connectors feature high vibration resistance and are sealed to IP67/IP69K ratings. Specified to ISO 15170 standards, the connectors are offered with stamped or machined contacts, along with mechanical- and color-coding. Typical pricing for the circular connectors ranges from $5 to $25 per mated pair.
