Kyocera Elco intros 'floating' SMT board-to-board connector

Sep 16, 2009

September 16, 2009 -- Kyocera Elco (Japan) announced the release of its Series 5668, an SMT type board-to-board connector for stacking connections, featuring a 0.5 mm pitch, 12.0 mm stacking height, and 100 positions, intended for devices in navigation systems, A/V equipment in vehicles, and industrial or medical electronic equipment. The product is described as a "floating connector realizing ±0.5mm movability in the direction of X and Y axes."

According to the company, with the Series 5668, it is possible to move the mated connectors by ±0.5mm in X and Y directions on the mounted surface, owing to the floating structure (two-piece body) of the plug. The connector's proprietary "twin-rib" structure eliminates foreign matters such as splash of flux and chips of board separation, and ensures high contact reliability.

The company says the RoHS-compliant connector enables designers to lay out patterns between rows of connector leads, as dead space is small, owing to no exposure of metal on the bottom surface of the connector, which is the most suitable structure for high density packaging. An operating temperature range from -40 deg. C to +105 deg. C makes the connector suitable for automobile equipment applications.

Other key features include: DC 0.4A max./contact rated current; DC 50V/contact rated voltage; AC 500Vrms/min. D.W. voltage; contact material: copper alloy; insulator material: heat resistant plastic.
