.25-MM PITCH FPC–This 0.25-mm (.010”) pitch FPC connector is designed to save up to 40 percent of space compared to similar 0.30-mm pitch connectors for applications in cell phones and other mobile devices. This new SMT ZIF (zero insertion force) connector, the company claims, offers the smallest overall size in terms of height, depth and length of any FPC connector in the market today. Available from 21 to 39 circuits, the SMT ZIF connector includes spring features on the terminals, designed to ensure secure electrical contact is maintained even if the cable is pulled up or down after actuation. The terminal design also provides full ZIF functionality, which means no contact is made between the cable and connector during insertion, providing protection against wear or damage to the FPC contact pads. The front flip Easy-On actuator is designed for simplified cable access and strong cable retention. An actuator-to-housing friction lock provides additional cable retention and an audible click when mating. The 0.25-mm pitch cable has a similar layout and tolerances as 0.30-mm pitch cable, which can make it more economical and easier to source than 0.20-mm pitch cable. The SMT ZIF bottom-contact series is rated at 0.2 amps and 50 volts. Operators can ensure the cable is properly placed, because it includes a large open area where the cable is inserted. The housing design also features a flat, open area to accommodate pick-and-place equipment. Front solder tabs under the housing provide space savings, stability, and strain relief for SMT solder joints.

INTEGRATED PINS FOR MEZZANINE CARD APPS–The expanded MicroSpeed family includes a new Blind-mate version for mezzanine card applications. The MicroSpeed connector is a 1.0-mm pitch system using SMT technology for data rates up to 10Gbits/sec. MicroSpeed is available in 50 signal contact modules and is designed to be used in multiples between two parallel cards without mating issues from negative tolerance stack up. The design allows many smaller connectors to be used to shorten PCB traces, reduce PCB layers and improve system airflow by providing a narrow profile. Two rows of 50-signal contacts with perimeter shielding present an “open pin field” design suitable for differential and single-ended requirements. The Blind-mate designs have integrated guide pins with higher displacement tolerances to stop incorrect, forced connections. Reinforced housing side walls absorb the larger forces that may result from virtual “blind mating” to prevent connector damage while providing a positive connection. This characteristic offers advantages specifically with larger, heavier PCBs that can be connected without additional board guides. MicroSpeed Blind-mate will initially be introduced in the standard height of 1 mm for the male connectors and 4 mm for the female parts for a combined 5 mm board-to-board height.
