Cicoil flex cable key to hearing aid innovation

Mar 1, 2009

A miniature flexible flat cable from Cicoil (www.cicoil.com) is key to the Songbird flexfit hearing aid, designed as an “over-the-counter” solution for people with moderate hearing loss or needing part-time hearing assistance.

The “fits-all” design is enabled by the miniature flat cable running from the behind-the-ear body to the microspeaker earpiece, which is user-adjustable for length and fit.

Cicoil’s 2-conductor cable features finely-braided copper wire, with base stranding of 60 AWG, creating high flexibility. The miniature cable is also designed to be strong enough tomechanically hold the earpiece, and is built to retain tensile strength while being pulled by the user to adjust the cable length or the position of the earpiece.

In addition, Cicoil’s proprietary crystal clear silicone jacketing is water and sweat resistant, making it suitable for use with a hearing aid device that is in constant contact with human skin and hair. The company says the combination of copper wires, translucent silicone jacket, and a thin form enable the miniature flex cable to blend naturally with a wide range of skin tones.

Cicoil says its flexible flat cables with silicone jacketing are designed for a wide range of health and medical applications, and can be manufactured in many configurations. Conductor sizes range from 4 to 44 AWG. CS
