South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. is conducting a voluntary recall of 98,000 dehumidifiers after receiving four additional reports of fires involving the previously recalled products in the U.S. In a statement posted on its Web site, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said it had again notified LG Electronics of the situation, following the reports, including one that caused "significant damage" to a home.
The first recall was announced on December 31 of last year as the dehumidifiers were found to have power connectors that can short-circuit, which poses a risk of fire. The commission advised customers to stop using the product and contact the company for free repair. The recalled products were made by LG Electronics' China unit and sold in U.S. retail stores, including Walmart and the Home Depot, between January 2007 and June 2008 under the brand name of Goldstar, or Comfort-Aire, according to the commission.
A spokesman for LG Electronics' headquarters in Seoul said that the company had recalled 1,200 units, or 1.22 percent of those shipped, as of Thursday, August 19.
