Independently tested connector said to exceed Category 6A requirements

Leviton Network Solutions (www.leviton.com/networksolutions) says its Category 6A technology is the first Intertek/ETL-tested connector to exceed component performance as defined in the recently finalized ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10 standard. The standard defines performance testing requirements up to 500 MHz for Category 6A systems to support 10GBase-T applications up to 100 meters. To achieve its performance, Leviton developed proprietary internal technologies that minimize alien crosstalk in the connector and channel. The connector features a patented Cone of Silence designed to effectively eliminate alien crosstalk between connectors in patching and work area applications.

Researchers demonstrate semi compounds on silicon

A Raytheon-led team (www.raytheon.com) has demonstrated that affordable, high-performance circuits for military applications can be produced by growing semiconductor compounds directly on silicon. “Selective placement of semiconductor compounds on silicon is an important achievement because it proves that optimal circuit performance can be produced through a heterogeneous, high-yield, monolithic integration process,” explains Dr. Tom Kazior, program manager for Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems (IDS). The demonstration is seen as a critical building block contributing to the success of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Compound Semiconductor Materials on Silicon (COSMOS) program.

New ganged RF multi-port technology debuts

Tyco Electronics (www.tycoelectronics.com) unveiled its QSL RF multi-port connector technology at the 2008 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium, held in Atlanta, GA in mid-June. The ganged connector series, available in a 3-position cable-to-board application and 3-position panel-mount cable assembly, is designed for high-density RF connector applications, including wireless-enabled products The design, based on Tyco’s precision stamped-and-formed contacts and termination technology, allows for flexibility to expand or stack multiple port configurations horizontally or vertically according to customer design parameters. Billed as an alternative to standard screw-machined or zinc die-cast RF connectors, the multi-port devices include a panel-mount version that is assembled with 1.32-mm double-braided coax cable terminated to ultra miniature coax connectors.

Agreements in the news

  • Carlisle Companies (www.carlisle.com) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately-owned Carlyle Inc., a provider of sophisticated aerospace and network interconnection solutions, for $200 million. Carlyle manufactures wire and cable harnesses, racks and panels, and cable assemblies for in-flight entertainment systems and specialty avionics applications. The business will operate within Carlisle’s Tensolite Company division, with the goal of strengthening Tensolite’s presence in specialty wire and cable and interconnect solutions for the aerospace industry.
  • Cinch (www.cinch.com) and Meritec (www.meritec.com) have entered into a technology agreement that will combine the collective expertise and product development of the two providers of high-performance connectors and cable assemblies. Through a technology license providing access to the Meritec NX InfiniBand Architecture Standard High-Speed Cable Assembly product line, Cinch will gain access to Meritec’s knowledge base and proprietary construction methodology for high-speed connector and cable design, manufacturing, and testing. Having a specialized approach to wire preparation, construction, and termination, as well as developing innovative backshell solutions, Meritec seeks to complement Cinch’s existing connector solutions with creative problem-solving for product development.
  • Swiss-based Schleuniger Group has acquired fellow Swiss wire-processing machine developer PAWO Systems AG. Like Schleuniger, PAWO develops and produces precision, niche-oriented machines for the global wire processing market, specializing in machines for the automatic assembly of loose parts to wires, especially automatic and semi-automatic installation of weather seals used in the automotive industry. Other industries are also considering seal applications for general-purpose applications to prevent intrusion of splash water and humidity into connectors. In addition, PAWO offers shuttle and conventional transfer machines used to solve complex wire processing, assembly, and quality testing. It owns 100% of PAWO Inc. in El Paso, TX—in the same building as Schleuniger’s El Paso office. Both offices are responsible for sales and service to Mexico and Central America. Schleuniger North America (www.schleuniger-na.com) is headquartered in Manchester, NH.
  • ITT Interconnect Solutions (www.ittcannon.com) is partnering with interconnect distributor PEI-Genesis (www.peigenesis.com) in the worldwide assembly and distribution of ITT VEAM CIR Series multi-pin connectors. “The service we have engaged in with PEI enables us to provide customers with almost any configuration in less than 48 hours,” says Allan Hendry, vice president of sales for ITT Interconnect Solutions. Russ Dorwart, COO at PEI-Genesis, adds, “Our new state-of-the-art facility in South Bend, IN, coupled with our in-house design engineering and field applications teams, allows us to produce more than 32,000 parts per day.” The South Bend facility houses complete flow and automation equipment. Nearly 65% of the orders PEI fulfills are in quantities of 10 or less.
