Tyco assemblies achieve VESA certification

Tyco Electronics (www.tycoelectronics.com) says its cable assemblies are the first to achieve full VESA DisplayPort Specification 1.1a certification. The certified assemblies are based on consistent transmission of digital data through 1, 2, or 4 main link lanes at the reduced bit rate of 1.62 Gbits/sec per lane, or high bit rate of 2.7 Gbits/sec per lane, yielding excellent high-definition (HD) video for computer and consumer applications. The certification required passing a battery of tests performed by an independent VESA-authorized test center. Tests included evaluating such parameters as intra-pair skew, far-end noise, near-end noise, bulk cable and connector impedance, insertion loss, and return loss.

Iris spring technology adds EMI shielding

Binder-USA’s (www.binder-usa.com) iris spring technology, which allows for quick connection of the cable shield to the connector housing, now incorporates EMI shielding for industrial and sensor applications. The company’s M12 connectors (Series 713, 715, and 825) offer electromagnetic interference protection for industrial applications with critical networking requirements.

Methode Electronics acquires power connector business

Burlington, MA-based Tribotek Inc. (www.tribotek-connectors.com), a designer and manufacturer of high current power connectors and power distribution systems for power supplies, servers, rectifiers, inverters, robotics, and automated test equipment, has been acquired by Methode Electronics (www.methode.com). Tribotek’s patented technology power connectors yield low insertion force and voltage drop at the connection point, and are designed to handle a greater number of plug-and-unplug occurrences. The company will be integrated into Methode’s Cableco Technologies Corp. (www.cablecotech.com), enabling Methode to offer a more complete range of power distribution solutions.

Company expands VITA-capable connector line

In response to customer requests for additional capabilities for next-generation VPX (VITA 41/46/47/48) applications, Tyco Electronics (www.tycoelectronics.com) says it is expanding its MULTIGIG RT interconnect line with modules that accommodate fiberoptics and dedicated power. Other modules, including coaxial contacts and high-voltage, are also in development. The VPX standard was created to meet evolving needs for high interconnection densities, high-speed operation, and fabric-based serial switched architectures. The company says its new modules will enable users to achieve greater flexibility in creating high-performance embedded computing applications, including popular optical interconnection schemes used in MIL-AERO applications (Expanded Beam, LuxCis optical termini, and MT ferrules). MULTIGIG RT connectors support data rates of 10+ Gbits/sec, and are optimized for signal integrity, high density, and mechanical and environmental robustness.

Northwire relocates Asian operations

Industrial-grade technical cable maker Northwire Inc. (www.northwire.com) has relocated and expanded its Asian headquarters. The new facility in Jiangsu Province, China includes a 5,300-square-foot warehouse and 3,400-square-foot office. The previous Asian operation in Shanghai did not include a warehouse. The new facility will stock a wide range of bulk cable products for distribution to customers in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

Agreements in the news

  • Molex (www.molex.com) and Samtec (www.samtec.com) are teaming up to offer AdvancedMC (AMC.0 B+) and MicroTCA connectors—identical in form fit and function—to ensure an increased supply and availability of AdvancedTCA connectors to the telecom marketplace. ATCA and MicroTCA interconnects offer standard platforms for many applications, including wireless infrastructure equipment, wireline networking equipment, and fiberoptic networking equipment. They are designed to support next-generation 10/12.5 Gbits/sec native channels.
  • The North American Components business of Arrow Electronics (www.arrow.com) is expanding its agreement with Amphenol Corp. (www.amphenol.com) to include products from Amphenol’s SV Microwave division that designs and manufactures coaxial connectors, cable assemblies, and attenuators used in the defense, satellite, aerospace and telecommunications industries. “We expect the market reach of Arrow in the military segment will enable us to maximize new opportunities,” says Subi Katragadda, general manger of SV Microwave.
  • MIL-SPEC interconnect distributor CDM Electronics (www.cdmelectronics.com) has signed a worldwide distribution agreement with Kings Electronics Corp. (www.kingselectronics.com), a manufacturer of RF connectors. CDM will distribute Kings’ range of standard, RoHS-compliant connectors and adapters, as well as provide engineering and design support services for customers requiring assistance for their OEM and cable assembly requirements. Included in Kings’ offering are more than 600 connectors and adapters qualified to MIL-PRF-39012 and MIL-PRF-55339—said to be more than any other manufacturer.
