Round-to-flat assemblies

Jun 1, 2007

Sherman Assembly Systems’ (SAS) patented process combines attributes of ribbon-cable mass-termination capabilities with the flexibility and advantages of a round cable. Often, the manufacturer claims, the process is more cost-effective than traditional crimp-and-poke used in round cable assemblies. A less-expensive option than standard flat and round manufactured cables, the assembly is not limited to termination every 18 inches.

Customization allows any number of connectors and any type of breakout, using shielded or unshielded cable with up to 96 conductors. The SAS process laminates each end of a regular round cable to accept a mass-terminated IDC connector. SAS says the process’ advantages include: round cable being 84% smaller than ribbon cable, round cable’s flexibility in all directions without stress fatigue, and easier routing inside equipment.
