Card edge connector technology developed for PCI Express performance

Oct 1, 2006

HARRISBURG, PA - A 1-mm centerline card edge connector has been developed by Tyco Electronics (www.tycoelectronics.com) to meet PCI Express point-to-point full duplex I/O bus standard performance. The architecture for server and client system I/O interconnects features a point-to-point link dedicated to each device rather than a shared bus, and the standard was introduced to let customers reach the high bandwdth required for leading-edge communications applications.

The company’s card edge technology is available in vertical, straddle-mount, and right-angle configurations for all standard PCI Express slot sizes.

“The vertical configuration is available with either solder or press-fit tails,” says John Larkin, Tyco Electronics’ product manager. “In addition, options are available with plastic locating posts or metal hold-downs, as well as various tail lengths and plating options.”

Applications include graphics cars in serial bus applications, I/O client cards for applications requiring higher speeds than the PCI bus, computers, and telecommunications switches and routers.
