Prysmian Group, a worldwide supplier of cables and systems for energy and telecommunications markets, has published its first environmental report. According to a press release, the document conveys the Group’s commitment to clear accountability towards its stakeholders also with regards the environmental results of its activities. The report, which analyzes the latest three years data, highlights significant results in the improvement of the environmental impact of the company's industrial activities, mainly in relation to decreasing consumption of energy, water and solvents, and garbage disposal.
In particular, in 2009 the overall electricity consumption of the Prysmian's energy cables factories declined compared to 2007, from approximately 3.3 million Gigajoule per tonne of product to approximately 2.9 million. In the same period the solvent consumption in the telecom cables activities decreased from 1.07 kilogram per tonne of product to 1.02. Also the water consumption dropped: in the energy cables, it shifted from 8.4 cubic meter per tonne of product to 7.2.
The Group says its commitment to environmental sustainability is realized both in production processes and in product innovation processes, supported by the continuous investments and the activities of 7 worldwide R&D centres that employ 400 experts. As member of Europacable association, Prysmian is also one of the promoters of the “Cable Manufacturers Environmental Code of Practice."
