Due to the demand for thermoplastics in the connector industry, the conductive- and static-dissipating-plastics product line now includes plastic connectors. The new Black Beauty (B2) line uses a type of plastic that dissipates static electricity to protect electrical components from permanent harm. The B2 plastic connector provides protection against static accumulation, electrostatic discharge, and electromagnetic interference. Applications include electronic connectors, mounting hardware, component carriers and trays, and structural components, such as brackets and housings. CONNECTORS UNLIMITED, PAINESVILLE, OH

PUSH-PULL CONNECTORS

Generally stainless steel, and designed for robotic applications, N series connectors have a number of features to benefit customers working in applications where the location or environment requires a robot, often called a telemanipulator, to make the connection. These telemanipulators come in low- and high-power units. The N series connectors have special features on both types of units. For small and low- power robots, a special lever reduces the mating force of connections. These features will make the remote connection job easier with no-turn, push-pull connections, and reduced operator stress. LEMO USA, ROHNERT PARK, CA

The new board/harness-to-PCB connector system cuts installed cost and saves board space versus conventional pin-and-socket designs. The electronic-control-unit (ECU) system is a modular, landed contact system that features a plug assembly. Power and signal contacts are encased in a custom housing. A latching system within the housing ensures secure and reliable mating to the PCB. Designed for automotive applications, the ECU connector is designed to mate directly to an engine management system, which can be mounted directly on an engine, meeting all rugged environmental requirements of USCAR and SAE J 2030. The new microminiature SMP series connectors offer design engineers efficient electrical performance in a small package size, along with blind-mating capability. In blind-mate applications with multiple connector pairs, these SMP connectors allow for as much as 0.010” misalignment of mating connectors without damage when engaging. An optional “catcher’s mitt” configuration can extend the misalignment tolerance to 0.020” (radially). Current configurations include straight and right-angle cable connectors, panel shrouds for use with hermetic seals, several lengths of “bullet” adapters, and panel-mounted cable connectors (including snap-in types). A new metal-body, dual-stack BNC connector combines the space-saving efficiency of a stacked design with the proven reliability of the time-tested BNC configuration. The twisting “snap-lock” design of the BNC connector has made it a preferred option for applications such as test equipment, radio-frequency patch panels, and lab instrumentation where a strong and reliable physical connection is important. The BNC 31202-HM series connector has a metal body for strength and shielding, and is available with an impedance of either 50 or 75 Ω. REGAL ELECTRONICS, SUNNYVALE, CA

The UCBJ250S-5-N is a newly designed PCB-mount jack, an addition to the M-BNC connector series. The patent-pending M-BNC Series addresses the issue of reducing size of OEM equipment by enabling a 40% increase in connector density. These products provide an ideal solution for high-reliability, high-data-rate, and high-frequency applications, such as telco Central Office DS3 and other Carrier Class applications. Matched to telco industry-standard BNC installation tools, this space-saving series does not require re-tooling or training for the cable side of the interconnect mated pair, and delivers frequency response over an extended bandwidth. Because magnetic properties of connector components can obscure the results of MRI scans, a range of high-performance, non-magnetic connectors have been designed for use in MRI environments. Depending on how close the connector is to the imaging volume, devices will require varying degrees of non-magnetic behavior. By careful selection of contact and housing materials, the connectors can now be offered with non-magnetic properties to suit the requirements of medical equipment customers. HYPERTRONICS, HUDSON, MA

LOW-PROFILE CONNECTOR

The Aptera low-profile connector offers a space-saving solution for server, storage, and networking applications. The connector’s design addresses difficult packaging challenges by balancing high-speed interconnection with the need to conserve board space and maximize airflow. The connector’s 10-mm slot pitch offers flexibility for applications that need high-performance connectors in tight spaces. Electrical test results demonstrate transmission characteristics with a cross talk of less than 2% at a 50-ps rise time (20 to 80%). Combined with a matched impedance interface and zero skew, the Aptera connector platform is scalable for future system design requirements. TERADYNE, NASHUA, NH
