An optical-fiber penetrator enables fiber to pass through a bulkhead or pressurized barrier intact. This fully field-installable and serviceable single-channel fiber penetrator is rated internally and externally to 10,000 psi and exhibits excellent optical loss characteristics of better than 0.1 dB with a backreflection of <–55 dB. This penetrator has been qualified with SMF-28 fiber and has an operating temperature of –60° to +85°C but is suitable for other single and multimode fibers. The improved industry-standard Field Master connectors for field-installation terminations have a strengthened design, enabling high precision and high reliability. Additional features include high-precision ceramic ferrules that ensure fiber alignment; industry-standard interfaces allowing interoperability with media equipment; and field-proven crimp technology improving tensile performance and ensuring secure cable terminations. Connector options include ST, SC, and LC. AFL TELECOMMUNICATIONS, SPARTANSBURG, SC www.afltele.com

LC CONNECTOR

For high-density, high-performance applications, the robust LC Slimpack connector is designed for use on dual-fiber, single-jacket round cable instead of a zipcord duplex cable. The LC Slimpack connectors use precision ceramic ferrules to ensure low insertion loss, low return loss, and high repeatability. The LC Slimpack is compatible with all LC adapters, and is designed so that two Slimpacks will cleanly fit side by side in one quad LC adapter. The LC Slimpack connector is fully tested and compliant with Telcordia GR-326-CORE and TIA/EIA-604-10 industry standards. ALLIANCE FIBER OPTIC PRODUCTS, SUNNYVALE, CA www.afop.com

CONNECTOR PLUG KITS

Singlemode LC connector plug kits are available in both simplex and duplex for 900-µm buffered cable and 1.6- to 2-mm, 2.4-mm, and 3-mm jacketed cable. The new LC connector design has increased body strength to improve the side-load characteristics. A knurled crimp body enables better cable retention, and a widened thumb latch makes it easier to unplug. The design uses one connector body style for both simplex and duplex applications. Duplexing is accomplished with a field-installable clip, which allows polarization corrections as well as the ability to turn simplex assemblies into duplex assemblies. The kits are undergoing GR-326 qualification testing. TYCO ELECTRONICS FIBEROPTICS, HARRISBURG, PA www.tycoelectronics/fiberoptics.com

HARSH-ENVIRONMENT CONNECTORS

A line of harsh-environment optical connectors has been added to the PHD multichannel optical-interconnect connectivity system. These new connectors are designed specifically for military, avionics, and industrial applications where optimal performance is required in the most severe conditions. The PHD system offers low insertion loss. It is a scalable design solution that can be easily modified for a broad range of applications. ITT INDUSTRIES CANNON, RALEIGH, NC www.ittcannon.com

ST CONNECTORS

These ST fiber connectors employ a rugged metal bayonet coupling ring with radial ramps, which facilitate engagement to the studs of the mating adapter. Two ST connectors are available for jacketed fiber, one with a beige boot and one with a black boot. The two colors enable easy identification of the fibers when terminating individual connectors to form a duplex jumper. Optical ST connectors are available in both singlemode and multimode and for jacketed and buffered fiber. SIEMON, WATERTOWN, CT www.siemon.com

FIBEROPTIC ADAPTERS

The availability of a new series of patented adaptors compliments its line of MU, SC, and FC series optical-fiber interconnects. An innovative system that allows for multiple adapting of in-series or between-series interfaces and at the same time provides organized routing of associated hanging cables. This approach is available for varied combinations of FC, SC, and MU optical interfaces and all duplex and multiport angled adapters. COMPEL ELECTRONICS, ASHLAND, MA www.compelna.com

HARDENED CONNECTORS

Hardened connectors are designed for use in fiber to the premises network deployments where aerial or buried fiber is used. The connector allows for easy installation with minimal training requirements and features an adapter that is easily integrated into any access terminal or case. The cable assemblies can be custom-configured to suit any application and feature a NEMA-6 connector shell with factory termination to GR-326 requirements to ensure high performance and network reliability. Available connector styles housed within the hardened shell are UPC SC, LC, and LX.5 as well as APC SC, LC, and LX.5 footprints. ADC TELECOMMUNICATIONS, EDEN PRAIRIE, MN www.adc.com

PLASTIC OPTICAL SYSTEM

The IDB-1394 S200 system supports new technologies for applications in the automotive industry. In addition to being in full compliance with the IDB-1394 specification, this socket connector and mating cable assembly are operational with cable lengths of up to 50 m. The housing is fully polarized and designed with locator pegs for easy PCB placement. The POF system is capable of transmitting high-speed data up to S200 and uses newly released transceivers and receivers from Firecomms designed specifically for automotive applications. This product also combines high-speed modulation (250 Mbits/s) with low-power consumption. LUMBERG, MIDLOTHIAN, VA www.lumbergusa.com

PM CONNECTORS, FERRULES

These polarization-maintaining (PM) connectors and ferrules for fiber termination and bulkhead receptacles to attach fibers to devices are based on a high-precision butt-style connection technique. The PM axis orientation is maintained by using male connectors with a positioning key and a bulkhead female receptacle with a tightly toleranced keyway, ensuring good repeatability in extinction ratios and insertion losses. The PM connectors and patch cords have been made for many different connector types including FC, SC, and LC. OZ OPTICS, CARP, ONTARIO, CANADA www.ozoptics.com

CABLE ASSEMBLIES

Multimode optical-fiber-cable assemblies offer reliability and ruggedness for applications requiring tight bends, durability, and dependability. The glass/glass/polymer (GGP) fiberoptic cable assemblies can be customized with any combination of FC, ST, SC low-EMI, or LC on any end. The bending stress of a GGP fiber is approximately 20° less than that of standard glass fibers (comparing 250-µm buffer-coated fiber). Reduced stress allows a tighter bend radius. With glass cladding of 125-µm diameter, the cable assemblies are available immediately. 3M TELECOMMUNICATIONS, AUSTIN, TX www.3M.com

FIBEROPTIC CABINETS

NEMA-12-rated TICE series wall-mount cabinets provide for increased protection from indoor contaminants and accommodate up to 144 fibers in a range of cabinet sizes. They feature a dual-hinged design to ensure seperation of owner/client network segments and maximize wall space utilization for both splicing and interconnection. The MDC series wall- or rack-mount cabinets accommodate up to 216 fibers and offer the flexibility to configure the enclosures for either single- or dual-access applications. Both the TICE and MDC series products can also accommodate optical-component modules, allowing the units to house splitters, WDMS, filters, and other optical components.
