TIA adopts numerous fiber measurement tests
ARLINGTON, VA — The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has adopted multiple tests for optical fibers as standard fiberoptic test procedures. The IEC-60793-1-50 and IEC-60793-1-51 tests are intended primarily to permit the observation of effects on optical fiber of high humidity and high temperature, respectively, over a given period. These tests have been adopted as American standard fiberoptic test procedure FOTP-160, (TIA-455-160-A) and FOTP-67 (TIA-455-67-A). The TIA has also adopted IEC-60793-1-43 for measurement of numerical aperture (NA) as an American national standard, FOTP-177 (TIA-455-177-B). This standard establishes uniform requirements for measuring the NA of optical fiber for commercial inspection. The NA of category A1 graded-index multimode fiber describes a fiber's light-gathering ability and is used to predict launching efficiency, joint loss at splices, and micro/macrobending performance.
Other measurement methods and test procedures adopted as American national standards include FOTP-234 (TIA-455-234), which deals with change in temperature; FOTP-74 (TIA-455-74-A), which deals with water immersion; and FOTP-231, TIA-455-231, which covers calibration of fiberoptic power meters.

Close to your Harting — LPKF Laser & Electronics AG (Garbsen, Germany) announced at Productronica 2003 in Munich, Germany, a partnership with Harting Technology Group (Espelkamp, Germany) that allows Harting to produce three-dimensional molded interconnect devices (3D-MIDs) for the micro-packaging field using LPKF's proprietary laser direct structuring (LDS) process. With this agreement, Harting, a supplier of electrical, electronic, and optical connectors and components, will become a supplier of LDS-made 3D-MID solutions. By the use and advancement of the LDS process, in which a liquid-crystal polymer mold is patterned with conductive pathways using an LPKF laser system, Harting can prototype and mass-produce micro-packaging solutions in-house. The agreement helps to refine LDS technology for commercial mass production and qualify 3D-MIDs for micro-packaging applications.
