LIGHTWEIGHT CONNECTORS — Space launch costs have been estimated to be more than $40,000 per pound. Reducing weight reduces costs and may allow more payload per launch. In response, these connectors are a new lightweight option to spaceflight D-subminiature connectors. Weight is reduced through the use of an aluminum shell as opposed to the standard brass shell. Like their brass counterparts, these new versions are available in standard density, high density, and combination variants. POSITRONIC INDUSTRIES, SPRINGFIELD, MO. www.connectpositronic.com

FLAT CABLE CONNECTORS — The new MIL-STD XG4M-U flat cable connector has a locking structure that allows the connector to be connected and disconnected with one hand even in confined or difficult-to-operate spaces, making it easier to handle than traditional flat cable connectors. The easy disconnect capability alleviates worker load when many connectors must be connected and disconnected. The XG4M-U saves up to 24% of board space over standard locking mechanisms of other connectors. The XG4M-U accepts 0.05-in. (1.27-mm) pitch flat cable. It is available in 10, 14, 16, 20, 26, 30, 34, 40, 50, 60, and 64 contact models. Its operating temperature ranges from -55°C to 105°C. Typical applications for the XG4M-U flat cable connector include PC peripherals, PCB assembly, semiconductor equipment, and industrial machines. OMRON, SCHAUMBURG, IL. www.info.omron.com

MODULAR BLOCK CONNECTORS — The Fibre-Channel modular block connector series features dual twinax blindmate assemblies that permit the transmit and receive of high-speed Ethernet data rate signals in one connector. This series allows for modular activity in PCB routing of high-speed signaling. Modular block connectors are capable of 100-W differential pair matched impedance and are optimized for maximum space utilization modularity and true signal integrity. The connectors provide EMI and lightning protection for sensitive avionic electronic systems enduring harsh environments found in military applications. SABRITEC, IRVINE, CA. www.sabritec.com

QUICK PROTOTYPE SERVICE — The Rapid Program Development capability brings new designs to market faster and reduces schedule time by up to 50%. Initial collaboration on product design, from simple to highly complex products, eliminates costly and time-consuming retooling during the prototyping process. In Rapid Program Development, selective laser sintering (SLS) is used to create tooling that produces hundreds to thousands of high-quality prototype parts. CAD designs are fed into the SLS system, which fuses powdered nylon or A6 steel into virtually any shape. Completion of a fully functioning plastic prototype can take as little as four hours. SEVERE-ENVIRONMENT SOLUTIONS — Environmental plug and hermetically sealed receptacle mating solutions are now available for the MIL-C-5015 series. Multiple-pin insert patterns of 10SL-3 through 20-27 are available from stock. Typical applications for these connectors include test, pressure, laboratory, and sensors that require performance under harsh conditions due to moisture, vacuum, vibration, and pressure. FIBEROPTIC CONNECTORS — New high-density 38999 PHD fiberoptic connectors are designed for use in military and harsh-environment applications. The PHD 38999 system is based on the proven LC ceramic ferrule used in millions of commercial interconnects. An alternative to traditional 29504-based optical interconnects, the bulkhead connector system is available in shell sizes 9 through 25 as defined by MIL-C-38999, and can accommodate up to 72 optical paths in a single connector. Single-mode, tuned single-mode, multimode, and a mix of single-mode/multimode configurations are available. Either size 16 or 22 PHD optical termini can be specified. COAXIAL CONNECTORS — This line of high-power SC coaxial connectors features a secure threaded coupling for radar and antenna systems in airborne, shipboard, and ground installations. The SC coaxial connectors are similar to C-series bayonet types but cannot vibrate loose. All straight and right-angle plugs, panel and bulkhead jacks, receptacles, and adapters meet MIL-C-39012 and MIL-STD-348 specifications. Suitable for cables from 0.141 to 5.8 in., these SC coaxial connectors come in a 5 KV version with overlapping Teflon dielectrics for a longer electrical leakage path or a 1-KV version with high-temperature (+165°C) Fluoroloy H dielectrics. COMPACT COUPLERS — The new ultra-lightweight MIL-STD-1553B coupler family is designed to be the smallest, lightest parts available without sacrificing ruggedness, quality, or performance. They are available as one- to six-stub in-line couplers, with or without internal bus terminators. The lightweight couplers are 5% smaller and 30% lighter, and are designed for installation in cable bundles and do not need clamps. When combined with lightweight bus cables, the new design can save several pounds of weight on a typical aircraft. TYCO ELECTRONICS, HARRISBURG, PA. www.tycoelectronics.com

HIGH-VOLTAGE CONNECTORS — The RADSOK contact and connector series is now available in smaller package sizes. The new connectors, for use in motors, bus bars, and backplane assemblies in military and aerospace applications, are available with ampacity ratings of 15 to 600+ A per contact. The connectors are available in sizes as small as a #16 contact, retaining the high-current capability (relative to size) of the RADSOK design. The hyperbolic grid configuration ensures a large, coaxial face-to-face engagement area for a low milli-volt drop connection with an insertion force from 2 to 10 lbs per contact. HIGH-SPEED CONNECTORS — The VME64X connectors are designed for high-reliability, high-speed and efficient data transfer in military, aerospace, and telecommunications applications. The stackable design has fully encapsulated conductive leads for optimal signal integrity. Rugged aluminum frames provide conduction cooling. The VME64X also features shielding that prevents EMI/RFI, insulators made of liquid-crystal polymer, and changeable length in wafer increments of five contacts. FIBEROPTIC INTERCONNECTS — Based on a high-density, low-cost, butt-joint terminus, the LuxCis fiberoptic interconnect is a new single- and multichannel connector solution for harsh environments, including commercial and military aircraft. The terminus is based on a standard 1.25-mm ferrule and sleeve and is compatible with standard LC polishing process. The cable jacket is crimped on the contact to make the cable pull-proof. This feature, available only with a semi-loose cable jacket, eliminates the connector backshell. The LuxCis interconnect system is available in standard connector formats such as MIL-DTL-38999, Arinc 600, and EPXA & B. RADIALL, STRATFORD, CT. www.radiall.com
