IWCS to feature CommScope's experts in copper, fiber, metallic cabling

Oct 28, 2011

CommScope's front line wire and cabling expertise be featured at the 2011 International Wire and Cable Symposium (IWCS) conference, to be held November 6-9 in Charlotte, NC at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Dr. Abhijit Sengupta, senior principal engineer, CommScope, will present a paper on the latest research surrounding bend-insensitive multimode fiber during the symposium's Session 7 on Tuesday, November 8 at 1 p.m. Sengupta co-authored the paper with Eric Leichter, manager training and technology, CommScope, and Paul Kolesar, a CommScope Fellow. The authors are based out of CommScope’s Enterprise Research and Development Center in Richardson, Texas.

Robert A. Wessels, Jr., board chairman, IWCS, and Trent Hayes, IWCS technical committee member, will chair two symposium sessions. Both Wessels and Hayes are based in CommScope’s Claremont, NC facility in research and development roles. Wessels is vice president, Cable Research and Development and Hayes is senior manager, Local-Area Network Twisted-Pair Cable Research and Development.

Larry Bleich, senior manager, Coaxial Cable and Materials, Research and Development, CommScope, will join Hayes and present a lecture on the fundamentals of copper cable design entitled, “Copper 101,” on November 6 at 1 p.m. during the IWCS Professional Development Courses. Wessels will chair IWCS Session 6, entitled “Copper Cabling Technology” on Tuesday, November 8 at 8 a.m. Papers presented during the session will address the growing problem with non-compliant cabling, using the spectrum emulation method in designs of multi-pair broadband cables, and next generation copper cabling. Other speakers will share information regarding the improvements that have been made in balun calibration for structured cabling and the assessment of cable bundle heating because of power transmission over Ethernet.

Additionally, Hayes will chair IWCS Session 13 entitled “Special Applications for Metallic Cables” on Wednesday, November 9 at 8 a.m. His session will discuss topics such as cost-effective methodology for power cable shielding, development of aluminum wire for automotive harnesses and the implementation of improved design and analysis for power harness used in modern automobiles. The session will also discuss the effects of electric vehicle charging systems on rail power grids and the development of lightweight halogen-free electric wire for railway rolling stock.

Eddie Edwards, president and chief executive officer, CommScope, will participate in the IWCS Executive Panel. The panel will be held at 10:45 a.m. EST Monday, November 7 where Edwards and others will discuss: the industry’s outlook for 2012; the effects on the market from bandwidth demand from wireless; and data-oriented devices. Additionally, the panel will also evaluate possible impacts from the Federal Communication Commission’s attempts to regulate Internet traffic on the demand for infrastructure growth in wired and wireless communications.
