Mil spec connectors from Armel used in Navy submarines

Aug 24, 2010

A defense subcontractor doing work for the U.S. Navy on a torpedo wiring harness contract approached Armel with the need for rugged, reliable circular interconnect that could meet Navy mil spec connector requirements not just for electrical performance, but also for high-pressure testing without suffering an internal leak on any of the contacts.

The manufacturer had become frustrated with its previous connector suppliers' 50 to 60 percent acceptance rate passing the stringent Navy test specs. Armel met the mil spec connector requirements and has been providing the contractor and the Navy with its TR39P1 circular connector, which the company says exceeds previous versions of the Navy connector requirement. Armel reports a 99.8 percent success rate.

Such a high success rate on mil-spec connectors has provided the Navy subcontractor with time and money savings in fulfilling their contract with the Navy, and has provided the military with a continuous supply of wiring harnesses to meet demand.

Armel is a manufacturer of mil-spec electronic components for military and commercial defense and aerospace applications. A full catalog is available at the company's Web site.
