PICMG ratifies MicroTCA.3 spec for more rugged connector environments

Feb 23, 2011

PICMG announced the adoption of the Hardened Conduction Cooled MicroTCA (MircoTCA.3) specification, which defines the requirements for connector systems that meet more stringent levels of temperature, shock, vibration, and other environmental conditions. This enables development and deployment of MicroTCA in more rugged environments like outdoor telecom, military, shipboard and other harsh mobile equipment environments.

“Successful testing of the MicroTCA connector system based on requirements from the MIL-STD-801 and RTCA/DO-160 standards combined with the adoption of this new specification opens harsher military and other rugged environments for MicroTCA,” said Doug Sandy, PICMG’s Vice President of Technology and Technical Fellow with Emerson Network Power.

PICMG says one important goal of the MicroTCA.3 working group was to demonstrate the ability of the system to meet extended environmental requirements including temperature, vibration and shock. This was accomplished by rigorous independent qualification testing of the connector and documented in test reports that are available for viewing via the Resources/Conduction Cooled MicroTCA links at www.picmg.org.
