According to reporting in the New York Times and elsewhere on the Web, Chrysler has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a wiring problem has forced the recall of 284,831 2008 -2009 Dodge Grand Caravans and Chrysler Town & Country minivans.
Chrysler told NHTSA on June 1 that “an improperly routed wiring harness” can be rubbed by a sliding door; this could wear through the vehicle's insulation, potentially causing a fire inside the door. Chrysler cited 57 reports of vehicles having “thermal damage” but said there has been no accidents or injuries.
In addition, 288,968 Jeep Wranglers from models years 2006 through 2010 are being recalled. The problem with the Jeeps, Chrysler says, is that the front inner fender liners may rub against brake lines and cause a leak. This situation could result in a “partial loss” of the brakes, the automaker told the safety agency.
