KYOTO, Japan -- Omron Corporation will release the XF3E, a 1.1 mm-high FPC (flexible printed circuit) connector with a pitch of 0.3 mm and 90 pins - billed as the highest pin count of its kind. FPC connectors are used in a wide range of digital devices, including mobile phones and smartphones, computers, optical disk drives, and LCD projectors.

According to the company, the XF3E FPC connector manages to accommodate 90 pins despite its diminutive dimensions, with a pitch of 0.3 mm, a height of 1.1 mm, and a depth of 4.3mm (when the slider is locked). A lower-profile, smaller footprint design has been achieved while still incorporating a durable backlock mechanism. The double-sided (upper and lower) contact point structure accepts any FPC insertion direction allowing increased freedom in device design. The connector is made from environmentally-friendly halogen-free materials.

The company notes that demand for multipole FPC connectors is growing due to the recent large increases in the amount of data transmitted within digital devices. In particular, the incorporation of an increasing variety of functions into touch panel-equipped mobile devices will necessitate increases in signal lines, and this is expected to result in a growing need for connectors with high pin counts.

Demand is also seen growing for high pin-count FPC connectors that have low-profile configurations which help manufacturers cater to the trend toward smaller and slimmer devices, and also for connectors that feature highly impact-resistant backlock mechanisms that are better able to withstand punishing daily use in mobile devices. Omron says the XF3E FPC connector was developed to meet all of these varied needs simultaneously.
